Gangs of hooded Ultras rode around on scooters following Reds fans around the city and the night before the match attacked several in the city centre. Three Italian men were arrested for attempted murder.

The game itself ended goalless leaving Roy Hodgson's team without a win in seven games, mounting the pressure on him to quit. Fernando Torres and captain Steven Gerrard were left out of the squad and didn't travel to Italy.
